Tom Yeomans
An image-based artist, I work across a broad range of media from paint to video, print to installation. The central concerns of my work are to raise questions of fact and fiction and what is true and false in an image. Often a work will be pushed through a long process of appropriation and reconfiguration to leave a final product which seems suspicious, where the sense of authorship and origin are disrupted. I see these gestures as mimicking the processes of contemporary life where we as individuals see the world through layers of spectacle and reproduction. However, where in the past artists have sought to bring down this symptom of capitalist society, I accept that spectacle can be good- democratic and available for everyone, everywhere. For example, several of my works appear as merchandise or reproductions available in mass at a cheap price. It is important to me that these messages are not forced upon the viewer as propaganda or radical protest. Rather, the viewer is invited to participate and interact on their own terms- in their own time.
