Materials

My focus upon distinct materials has allowed me to develop an understanding of their inherent properties and faculties and the possibilities for their application specific to my subject matter. The thread is a tactile medium with such a simplicity and purity of line and colour and I am constantly intrigued by its tenuous and fragile nature and its ability to describe such bold lines and articulate form within three dimensional spaces. The fact that it is manipulatable but still demands a certain tension and support creates a slippage that is a catalyst for continued exploration. Without the relationship to the walls and floor that provide the structure for my work, the installations could not exist in their current manifestations. This provides me with further scope for investigating architectural space – what the installations highlight structurally and what they signify in the notion of them being a conduit for expression of concepts and emotion and their relationship to corporeal resonance. Further expansion upon questioning that has arisen through critical response includes investigation of the structure of the installations and their reliance upon fixings and the limitations of the material independent of these. What I envisage in practical exploration is the continuance of the sculptural and spatial study that I have developed – furthering frequent ‘sketch-like’ installs and proposals as well as large scale installations in a greater range of contexts.
