Kathy Heyward is a city born, country bred artist who lives in a tram. She completed her BFA in Printmaking at the VCA in 2000 and then pursued various means, settling on teaching secondary students the meaning of art and life. She was studying the Post Graduate Diploma of Visual Arts at the VCA last year and is currently studying the Master of Fine Arts at Monash University.
I have established a condensed aesthetic and work practice and, naturally, my intention is to expand upon it. What I am seeking is to continue to nourish and develop my practice with further investigation, critical contextualistation and analysis. I intend to locate my work in relation to its historical and contemporary contexts. Inherent in my practice is a consideration of the work and its positioning within the considered tenet of contemporary art – what position does it hold and what intrinsic worth does it bring.
As my work has evolved, specific areas of investigation and various historical references have become pertinent. An understanding of the historical movements and work practices of Minimalism and Modernism has been of critical importance. Within a contemporary context, I find that there appears to be a resurgence in the application of concepts and derivatives from these particular movements and I feel that a careful examination of this contemporary engagement would be pertinent and informative.
It’s a given that the opportunities that are provided by research within an institutional context extend from the availability of concentrated critique and opinions through the breadth of tutorial capacity, quality of reference, research materials and resources. The progression of my work to date exemplifies the benefits of working alongside like minded practitioners. My work is largely instinctive but is constantly fed through viewer response, critical thought and the provocation to expand upon cognitive and formative qualities.
